The Empire State Building is the most famous skyscraper in New York, it is THE star of Manhattan! Even if it is no longer the tallest building in the city, it has long been the building of all records. Its two observatories (86th and 102nd) overlooking Manhattan offer a breathtaking view both by day and by night, making it one of the must-sees in New York. Let's put its creation in the context of the time: Chrysler and General Motors were the two giants of the American automobile industry. 1930, the country was in the midst of a crisis... and Chrysler had already launched the construction of its skyscraper, the Chrysler Building, a year and a half earlier. This was too much for John J. Raskob, founder of General Motors, who wanted his company to rule the skies over New York City. He therefore entrusted the construction of the Empire State Building to the architect William Lamb with one condition: that his skyscraper be built in less than 18 months! Work on this Art Deco style building began on 17 March 1930, and more than 3,000 workers worked tirelessly to meet this challenge. The teams took turns working day and night, 7 days a week and allowed the construction site to progress at a record pace: the Empire State Building rose 4 and a half floors per week! Mission accomplished 410 days later: the 102 floors of the skyscraper were built and the Empire State Building was inaugurated on May 1, 1931. On that date, the building did not yet have an antenna and reached a height of 381 metres. At 381 metres, the Empire State Building was the tallest skyscraper in the world and in New York until the construction of the twin towers of the World Trade Center in 1973 (417 metres). In 1952, with the installation of its antenna, the Empire State Building reached a height of 443 metres. It is no longer the tallest skyscraper in New York since 2013 and the construction of the One World Trade Center which replaced the twin towers (417 metres, 541 metres with the antenna). This skyscraper is also home to another observatory that offers a completely different view of lower Manhattan, the Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty.
